More Than Tees: The Story Behind Puddle Pirate
This Small Business Saturday, we’re going back to where it all began.
Puddle Pirate isn’t just a t-shirt company. It’s a Coast Guard-rooted brand built on community, connection, and the stories that bind us together. In our latest podcast episode, Don Folino—the captain behind the brand—shares how a military career, a personal loss, and a desire to give back shaped what Puddle Pirate is today.
After serving in the Coast Guard reserves, including deployments during Hurricane Katrina and in Kuwait, Don stayed connected to the service through veteran organizations. But in 2016, the loss of a fellow crew member to suicide sparked a deeper mission: stay involved, stay present, and keep giving back.
That mission eventually led Don to acquire Puddle Pirate from its original founder. What started as a gear brand with heart has grown into a community hub. And Don’s goal? To tell stories that resonate with every Coastie—whether you’re fresh out of Cape May or decades retired.
From designs like the “Cape May Crud Survivor” to charitable releases like “Hope Floats” for breast cancer awareness, everything we put out is made with meaning. We’ve stood booths at community festivals, shared sea stories, and built gear that sparks curiosity from civilians and pride from those who serve.
Sure, we sell tees—but it’s bigger than that.
Puddle Pirate exists to celebrate the Coast Guard, support the community, and keep our shared history alive.
If you’ve ever worn our gear, supported our mission, or shared a laugh over the name—thank you. You’re the reason we keep doing this.
