Carrying on a Legacy: The Chicago Christmas Ship and the Coast Guard Tradition
Each December, a unique and heartwarming tradition unfolds on the waters of Lake Michigan — one that connects maritime heritage, community generosity, and Coast Guard service.
The Original Christmas Ship: Rouse Simmons
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, ships laden with evergreen trees made their way from northern Michigan ports to the busy docks of Chicago to meet the high demand for Christmas trees. Among them was a three‑masted wooden schooner called the Rouse Simmons. Operated by Herman Schuenemann — affectionately known as “Captain Santa” — the vessel became endearingly known as the Christmas Tree Ship for its annual voyages delivering trees directly to Chicago families.
Schuenemann wasn’t just a seller — he was a giver. He often donated trees to local families and charities, turning a business into a mission of holiday cheer.
Tragically, on November 23, 1912, the Rouse Simmons set sail on what would be its final Christmas run. Overloaded with trees and caught in a fierce Lake Michigan storm, the ship and all aboard were lost. Though it never arrived, its story remained — a symbol of selflessness and seasonal spirit that would not be forgotten.
A Tradition Reborn — Coast Guard Steps In
Nearly 90 years later, the U.S. Coast Guard helped bring that spirit back to life. Since 2000, cutters like the USCGC Mackinaw have delivered thousands of donated Christmas trees to Navy Pier in Chicago — honoring the Rouse Simmons and continuing its mission of goodwill.
This modern-day Christmas Ship tradition is carried out with the help of the Chicago Christmas Ship Committee, local charities, volunteers, and Coast Guard crews. Each December, thousands of trees are offloaded and delivered to families in need across the city — all in the same spirit of giving that defined Captain Schuenemann.
What It Means Today
Today, the Chicago Christmas Ship is more than a reenactment — it’s a living legacy. The Coast Guard’s role in this mission reminds us that service goes beyond the waterline. It’s about community, tradition, and keeping history alive through action.
“The Christmas Ship isn’t just about trees — it’s about giving, remembering, and serving. That’s what makes it timeless.”
