Coffee, Midwatches, and the Coasties Who Keep Things Moving
There’s a particular kind of disappointment that comes with picking up your coffee, taking a sip, and realizing it went cold while you were doing everything else.
You drink it anyway. You’ve got things to do.
If you’ve spent time in the Coast Guard, that probably sounds familiar. Coffee finds its way into early mornings, late watches, and the space between “we’re almost done” and whatever happens next. Sometimes you get to enjoy it. Sometimes you’re just grateful you remembered where you put your mug.
Ask a group of Coasties about coffee and you’ll probably get strong opinions. Who made the best pot. Who made something that could strip paint. Which mug was off limits. And whether the person who took the last cup ever bothered to make more.
That last one can follow you longer than you’d think.
But the part that stays with us often has less to do with what was in the cup and more to do with who was standing beside us. Coffee gave us a reason to stop for a minute, trade stories, complain about something, or check in with a shipmate. A fresh pot could bring people together without anyone having to organize a thing.
And during a midwatch, a little conversation could be just as welcome as the coffee itself.
Those ordinary moments become part of how we remember our service. We remember the missions and the milestones, sure. We also remember the people who could make us laugh when we were tired, the conversations that wandered in every direction, and the familiar routines that made a duty station feel like ours.
That’s the Coast Guard connection behind Puddle Pirate’s Buoy Blend.
Coffee belongs in the everyday side of this community. The side that shows up before work, around the kitchen table, at the dock, or whenever a couple of old shipmates finally get together. It’s something familiar we can carry into life after the uniform, even if our mornings look a little different now.
Maybe your coffee no longer comes with a watch schedule. Maybe you get to drink it while it’s still hot. Either way, there’s room for a little Coast Guard spirit in the routine.
So here’s to the early risers, the midwatch crews, and the shipmate who always put on another pot.
Pour yourself a cup of Buoy Blend, and tell us: who made the best coffee at your unit, and who should have been permanently banned from touching the coffee maker?
